Congressional Cemetery,1801 E Street Southeast, Washington,
DC
The first burial was in 1807 on lands purchased with private funds. It was
deeded to Christ Church in 1812 and named Washington Parish Burial Ground. The
vestry changed the name to Washington Cemetery in 1846. Congress, by way of
appropriations for repairs and improvements, coined the current name. Many older
stones have disappeared. The office maintains written records from early dates,
in the form of Range Lists (identify plat owners and interments in those plats)
and Records of Interments (early records indicate little more than the deceased;

31 Oct 1871. Mrs. Virginia Sothoron to burial sites No 71, 72, 73, 74 in Range

18 Nov 1916. Georgianna F. Sothoron, a 52 year old female, died this date of
myocarditis. She was born in England and lived at 1004 S.C. Ave SE. She was
buried “ED” (extra deep) on 21 November 1916 in Lot 93 of Range 25, a lot owned
by James H. Sothoron.
3 Nov 1918. Jno. R. Sothoron, a male, died at the age of 52 of mitral
regurgitation. He was born in Maryland and lived in Washington. He was buried in
Lot 283 of Range 43, a single plat owned by Andrew W. Sothron.
21 Aug 1925. John H. Sothoron, a 51 year old male, died this date of acute
appendicitis and acute peritionitis. He was born in Maryland and lived at 3016
7th SE. He was buried 24 August 1925 in Lot 93 of Range 25, a lot shared with
Georgianna F. Sothoron, and which was owned by James H. Sothoron.
3 March 1927. John A. Sothoron, a 56 year old male, died this date from a skull
fracture he incurred when struck by a street car. He was born in DC and lived at
330 Dist SE. He was buried on 7 March 1927 in Lot 71 of Range 72, the burial
place of John Sothoron; John was disinterred and buried more deeply, with John
A. buried over him in the same lot. The lot was purchased by Mrs. Virginia
Sothoron in Oct 1868.
11 Feb 1928. Jessie E. Sothoron, a 69 year old female, died this date of
cardiorenal disease & aortic stenosis. She was born in DC & lived at 326 Mass
Ave NE. Burial was on 14 Feb 1928 in Lot 74 of Range 71, owned by Virginia
Sothoron since Oct 1871.
3 Aug 1940. Grace E. Sothoron, a 50 year old female, died as a result of
pulmonary TB. She had lived in Glendale, MD. She was buried on 6 August 1940 in
Lot 101 of Range 21, a lot owned by Margaret S. Cross since May 1913. She was
buried “ED” (extra deep), and shares the same lot with Earl Sothoron. The
adjacent Lot, also owned by Margaret Cross, contains the remains of Harry Cross
(March 1913) and Virginia L. Brown (April 1925).
14 Jan 1950. Notley B. Sothoron, an 84 year old male, died this date at Casualty
Hospital of congestive heart failure. He was buried “W.V.” (with vault) on 17
January 1950 in Lot 71 of Range 71, owned by Virginia Sothoron since Oct 1871.
26 Oct 1962. Earl Sothoron, a 72 year old male, died this date at Prince
George’s Hospital. Cause of death is not stated. He was buried 10 Oct 1962 in
Lot 101 of Range 25, over top of Grace E. Sothoron. The lot owner was Margaret
